GO ON PILGRIMAGE

Lalibela is one of the holiest cities in the world, known as the Jerusalem of Ethiopia and home to the rock-hewn churches (monolithic churches) of the 12th century. The 11 medieval churches of Lalibela are registered as sites of "outstanding universal value" by UNESCO. The most famous of these is Beta Giyorgis (Church of St George). These churches are attributed to King Lalibela who set out to construct a "New Jerusalem" after Muslim conquests halted Christian pilgrimages to the Holy Land.

There are many churches in Lalibela itself, but others are slightly further afield scattered in the Ethiopian Highlands, accessible by vehicle or mule. One of these, Yemrehanna Kristos, is an 11th century stone church on the west side of Abuna Yosef built in an enormous volcano cave that formerly housed an underground lake. Another, Asheten Maryam, is carved out of a cleft on the cliffs with 360 degree views of the valley and town below (a few hours' hike from Lalibela).

We can organize tours to the churches of Lalibela and in the surrounding areas. Combine visits to Asheten Maryam and Yemrehanna Kristos with a hike or a community visit. Just ask us.
