LAKE TANA AND THE BLUE NILE FALLS
The shores of Lake Tana is one of our favourite places to drink a beer and chill in Ethiopia. Best explored from Bahir Dar , a city sometimes called the Ethiopian Riviera, Lake Tana is the largest lake of Ethiopia and lies in a depression of the north-west plateau, 1,800m above sea level. It feeds into the Blue Nile and is a hotspot of biodiversity and is a dream for birdwatchers and lovers of hippopotamuses.
The peninsulas of Lake Tana and its many islands are also home to some of Ethiopia's most venerated monasteries. Several of the monasteries are open to the public (although a few are only to men), and are accessible by a beautiful boat ride across the lake.
The Blue Nile Falls is known as the Great Smoke in Amharic (Tis Abay). Since Ethiopian began to divert a stretch of the Blue Nile to build the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the waterfalls are perhaps not as majestic as it used to be. But, it's still worth a visit for its beautiful surroundings and the communities nearby. It's also a great spot to watch local tourists from other parts of Ethiopia frolick and go crazy!
